PVC Composite Decking Vs Wooden Decking

               

As the owner and director of a business near Cardiff South Wales that has been actively involved in supplying Composite & Wooden Decking products for over 15 years I have compiled an article which hopefully will help the consumer to better understand current trends and changes within the UK decking industry.

Why would a customer feel the need to change Wooden decking for a composite of PVC alternative Deck plank and what advantages would that give the customer ?

What is a Composite Decking Plank and why would I use this instead of Wooden Decking?

Composite decking is a man-made Decking plank that includes a mix of recycled wood fibres and recycled plastic.

What is a PVC Decking Board ?

PVC decking is a more expensive option in the decking industry, PVC Decking can offer a better fade and stain resistance and lower maintenance requirement make it a firm favourite to other products.

What is a Wooden Decking Board ?

A Decking board is generally designed for walking on externally. The construction of the deck board is wooden throughout usually softwood, Redwood or Hardwood.

So the question is Why are consumers changing over to alternative types PVCu & Composite Decking ?

• The answer is quite simple there are two main deciding factors. The 1^st factor is that customers are generally trying to move away from having to maintain the Wooden Decking by applying oils or preservers
• The 2^nd Factor is that customers are concerned that Wooden decking is slippery when it is wet. ( This is true of a poorly maintained Decking board ).

My opinion of the Decking Market

With these factors in mind consumers are moving towards Composite and PVC Decking boards as an alternative to Wooden decking boards. However these added benefits come at a cost, PVC and composite decking is a minimum of twice the price. This in turn discourages the less affluent consumers within the market place which is why demand for wooden decking is still very strong.

I thought hard as to weather or not I should list the various different manufacturers and brands of PVC & Composite Decking along with their relevant pros and cons. However I decided that I did not want readers to think that I am endorsing any one particular manufacturer of Decking boards.
