These days, tastes in home décor tend to veer towards clean, uncluttered spaces featuring simple, elegant lines in soft, soothing colours – very different from the styles preferred in the last century! Interestingly, our gardens today have become a continuation of our homes in terms of simplicity of products and design, and this includes our choices in patio slabs.

Though popular stone slabs like concrete, limestone and slate are still popular, there is a growing demand for less traditional, more modern, striking finishes.  At DG Heath, we have embraced this trend and we now stock a range of patio slabs suited to a contemporary theme including Porcelain, Granite and Quartzite.

These patio slabs create clean, crisp lines and often come in larger sizes to create an uncluttered appearance, with sawn, straight edges for simplicity of finish.

Porcelain: a Contemporary Patio Style

At DG Heath, last year we saw an explosion in the popularity of porcelain patio slabs.  As well as being easy to maintain (so perfect for those with a busy lifestyle), these slabs are very easy to maintain, are uniform in shape and are suitable for virtually any garden.

Porcelain patio slabs are  produced by baking a mixture of clay, sand and minerals in a high temperature kiln producing an incredibly durable and no- porous material.  This creates a very dense material which is what makes it so hard-wearing.  Porcelain products are also extremely low-maintenance, and frost and algae resistant. They come in a wide range of colours and styles, all of which replicate a natural finish and are ideal for a seamless transition from your kitchen or dining room out to your patio.

Granite: High Quality Patio Slabs with Strength & Durability

Granite patio slabs have also seen a surge in popularity in a similar way to granite kitchen worktops. 

These slabs always create a modern space with a smooth surface and neat, straight lined, contemporary edges.  What’s more, granite cannot be beaten when it comes to strength and durability.

Our Venetian range of granite patio slabs makes an elegant paving material for a  formal outdoor space. Sold as brick-shaped pieces called sets or as uniform-size flagstone, these granite slabs in an attractive dark grey are free of spots and blotches, for a sleek, stream-lined finish. 

Granite slabs tend to be at the higher price range as the hardness which makes granite so durable, can also make it more difficult to work.  We have many customers, who like the granite patio slabs so much that they use sets at decorative edges or patterns inset within other materials.

Quartzite:

Quartzite is a type of sandstone which has become very popular for a modern garden as its natural minerals cause its unique colours, patterns and sparkle.  The aesthetic appeal combined with the durability of the slabs, makes Quartzite the ideal choice for contemporary outside space.

Our Quartzite range comes in a variety of colours including a silvery grey with hints of green, pink and red through to a shimmery black. All these slabs have a distinctive sparkle from the tightly interlocking grains of quartz contained within the stone.
