Does composite decking warp or twist?

As a company and supplier of timber, PVC and composite decking we have never come across a case were a customer or client has had boards warping or twisting.

As long as the composite boards are fitted as per the manufacturer's instructions you will have no problems.

If you had a huge gap between the base centres on the boards or they weren't fixed properly then that could cause the boards and hence your decking to move. But as long as you lay the boards using the correct fittings across 400 mm centres on the base.

Can composite decking warp?

As we have already suggested composite decking shouldn’t warp. However, it may sag if you have installed it correctly by not using the correct spacing between centres on the joists when it was installed.

Composite should be installed with 400 mm centres across the joists for most applications.

How far apart are joists on a composite deck?

For domestic or residential use the recommended spacing for straight decking is a maximum of 400 mm and you can achieve a more rigid structure if you use 300 mm centres.

If you a laying your boards for a diagonal pattern you should use 300 mm centres between joists.

Do you have to stagger composite decking?

We would not recommend staggering your decking when laying your composite decking.

By its very nature staggered decking would require butt joints, but your decking will expand and contract throughout the year and whilst these movements are small compared to the original hollow bboards you will still end up with an unsightly deck.

You are advised to design your deck to avoid staggered boards.
