What Is Wide Plank Flooring?
Wide plank engineered flooring is basically a layer of plywood with a solid wooden veneer so to look at and the feel for all intents and purposes it's real wood.
However, because it is engineered wood flooring it has the advantage over real wood in that it is a lot more stable.
Whereas with your traditional solid oak boards they're very prone to expansion and contraction with the climate change, with engineered it's a lot more stable and that's because of the plywood base layer.
The engineered boards have the fibres going in different directions which means that it's not so susceptible to expand and contract.
What is considered wide plank flooring?
Regular flooring tends to be available in widths 2 – 4 inches whereas wide plank flooring starts at 5 inches and can be up to 12 inches wide.
Do wide planks make a room look smaller?
This is a great question. Contrary to what you may naturally think or expect, wide plank flooring does not always make your room or space look smaller. When you lay the flooring down, even though the planks are wider than standard boards, because of the visual tricks wide plank plays on your eyes, your room or space often appears larger than it is, which is interesting as you would fully expect it to be the other way around.
Why would anybody use a wide board?
Wide boards are becoming very popular, people like the very long wide boards and we’re seeing a growing trend for this style of engineered board.
In other words it’s in fashion at present and will probably stay in fashion for the foreseeable future.
Can wide boards be used across joists?
We wouldn’t recommend using engineered flooring that is only 14mm thick but the thicker 21mm boards can be used safely across the joists.
What about colours and finishes?
There is a huge range. We've probably got over 200 engineered boards in stock right but you know it's worth coming down have a little look.
